We are proud to announce and welcome Pro Mountain Biker Christine Eikmeier AKA Johny Ringo to the SIX Nutrition team.
“Ever since I was a young child, I have had a dedicated passion for mountain biking! Whether it’s shredding a downhill trail or powering up a steep climb, nothing brings more joy than riding mountain bikes. I’m currently based out of Murrieta, just north of San Diego, California because the weather and local trails allow me to ride and train all year round. I am grateful to be able to pursue my biking dream and ride/train as much as possible. I love racing competitively and find it fun, challenging, and exciting! 2013 was my first year racing downhill. I had such a blast and progressed quickly. During this time, I have had great support from my current sponsors. Most of all, I want to have fun riding, and become the best rider I can, which is truly my dream”!

7 recent reviews; unedited, SIX for MEN vitamins from amazon.com

As a physician and long time clean endurance athlete, I am normally skeptical of vitamins that claim to increase performance and worry that most vitamins go down the toilet with your urine. SixNutrition is different. Recognizing the effects placebo can have, I started taking Six Nutrition thinking they would not have any demonstrable effect. I was wrong. I am less tired, more alert, and recovery after exercise is faster. I am on board with Six Nutrition and will make sure they are part of my long term training and health maintenance plan. This is a vitamin for endurance athletes you can trust.

Pretty outstanding product. Made me feel pretty good, bit more energy and felt like it did what it’s purpose was. I have been a pretty avid user of many types of vitamin packs from different brands and I am a big believer in the use of them. I believe this is one of the better packs I have tried so far

Cold Weather Hydration -or-
Hydration Considerations In Cold Weather
Cold Weather Hydration
With Winter in full swing and the much of the nation hit by one sort of polar phenomenon or another it is important to stay hydrated especially since we don’t realize how fast dehydrate.
By The Numbers
Water is an essential component for all processes the body completes each day. While most of these processes occur without our awareness, without adequate water availability they would not occur, and in cold weather, not enough water increases certain problems.
The human body is made up of 70% water; most of the water is found in and around tissues like skin and within the tiny individual cells that make up our body parts like organs. We lose water on a daily basis in the following ways:
- 1/2L lost through normal breathing
- 1/2L lost through perspiration
- 1.5L lost through urine and bowel excretion
- >2L lost through exercise
The loss of water throughout the day is usually replenished when we get thirsty. During warmer weather we are very aware of water loss because of the sweating mechanism our body uses to keep cool. But what about during colder weather; do we still lose water? Do we sweat as much during colder weather exercise?
How Does It Work?
The kidneys regulate the amount of fluid loss through urine output and actual water lost through exhalation is negligible. Food items containing caffeine (tea, chocolate and soft drinks) can increase output since caffeine acts as a diuretic. When our bodies have enough water on board to facilitate all the transactions each day, any excess can be expended through urine output.
What if there isn’t enough water on board throughout the day?
Dehydration can occur when we don’t take in enough water to compensate for the water lost during routine processes or exercise. How does one know if they are dehydrated?
The thirst mechanism is usually a slow reaction to an event that has already taken place and therefore not a reliable indicator of hydration.
Urinary markers for dehydration include a reduced urine volume, a high urine specific gravity, a high urine osmolality, and a dark urine color. Specific gravity and osmolality are measurements taken in a clinical setting by a healthcare professional. However, the individual easily assesses volume and color.
Other symptoms of dehydration can include:
- Irritability, headache, fatigue
- Weakness, dizziness, nausea
- Having a dry or sticky mouth
Dehydration and Performance
Dehydration negatively affects competition, training and recovery during. Exercise heart rate increases, blood flow to the skin decreases which helps cool the body during exercise and the core body temperature can increase more than it should during exercise. Performance decreases with a loss of 1-2% of bodyweight. Figure 1 illustrates the relationship between performance and body water lost.
Cold Weather Hydration
Awareness, recognition and education are the ways to help prevent dehydration during cold weather training.
While proper clothing is essential during cold weather, some of the same technology that keeps us comfortable may inhibit the ability to appreciate sweat rate or water loss during exercise.
The goal is to replace 100% of sweat and electrolytes lost during exercise outdoors. The recommendations are 1/2L of fluid per kg of weight loss. Use a simple weigh-in/weigh-out procedure to determine the amount of kg’s lost. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends ingesting 125 ml (5 ounces) every 20 minutes of exercise.
Understand that we continue to lose fluids, even during cold weather exercise, and the importance of replacing those fluids in order to stay healthy and have a positive effect on performance.

Tablet vs Capsule Vitamins; is there a difference?
There are a two opposing camps about the tablet vs capsule vitamins argument. Let’s break it down here though and see how the two compare.
The biggest differentiation in the tablet vs capsule vitamins argument is really in tablet disintegration. This is important because a tablet that breaks down too slowly will fail to provide the specific nutrient to critical intestinal sites, decreasing absorption and potentially causing gastrointestinal upset. For higher quality and often the more expensive tablets, strict specifications for tablet disintegration and testing is the only way to that every lot meets industry specifications. Aside from disintegration, there is also tablet friability (chipping) and hardness (breaking strength). Mineral tablets, for example should disintegrate in less than 45 minutes, as specified by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP).
To round out the tablet vs capsule vitamins argument- capsules are usually made from animal source gelatin or, if vegetarian, from starches like plant fiber derivatives. This allows them to dissolve from anywhere from almost instantly to within a matter of 15 to 30 minutes.
Here is a brief summary of the relative characteristics of tablet vs capsule vitamins:
Typical Multivitamin in a capsule form
ADVANTAGES OF CAPSULES
Unique mixes and ingredients are possible
Sealed hard gelatin caps are good oxygen barriers
Protection for sensitive ingredients
Shell normally breaks down/opens in 4 minutes
Reduced gastrointestinal irritation
Odorless, tasteless, easy to swallow
Oil and fat-soluble nutrient delivery
DISADVANTAGES OF CAPSULES
Bulky materials can result in large capsule size
Can be susceptible to moisture
A typical multivitamin in tablet form
ADVANTAGES OF TABLETS
Custom size, shape, and appearance
Notching possible for dose splitting
Low cost coatings for enteric delivery
DISADVANTAGES OF TABLETS
Excessive compaction, poor dissolution
Granulation technique can add heat/moisture to viable components
Customer concerns/self-testing of tablet dissolution
Problems with irritant compounds exacerbated by poor tableting
Now there is often a price difference between tablets vs capsule vitamins. Tablets are what many large scale manufactures use for their vitamins since they are cheaper when done in bulk. At SIX nutrition we don’t use tablets in our vitamins. We only use capsules so that we can deliver the right about of vitamins at the right amount of time.
Customers who love SIX Nutrition – Philip Lee
Professor Phil Lee
We would like to introduce you to Philip Lee. He was one of our first customers at SIX Nutrition. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the Harvard Graduate School of Education and currently an Assistant Professor at a public interest law school in DC.
Philip was bullied as a young child until he started to learn martial arts (Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Muay Thai). Interestingly enough though he says, “it wasn’t the punches, kicks, or throws that stopped the victimization, but the confidence that came from the learning process”.
As a favorite role model, Philip does not have to look far to see his father, who is “inspired by love and tells the truth”. Philip is currently running and lifting weights three times a week while trying to balance being a law professor with being a husband to an amazing woman and being a father to three energetic children (ages 5, 3, and 1).
Even if he were completely independently wealthy, he would not change much about what he is doing as he enjoys the life he leads.
Philip, we appreciate your support and business. We applaud your diligence and wish you the best in the rest of your 2014 goals. Best of luck as you exercise consistently, vacation with you wife and kids in a tropical location, and publish your book about academic freedom.
Is there such thing as a Paleo Multivitamin and should I be taking it?
The paleo diet, by gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin, is one of the most natural ways to improve your health. To adhere to the paleo diet, one lives by the guiding principle that our bodies evolved to digest certain types of foods. Since the agricultural revolution came after our bodies evolved to digest meat, vegetables, berries, and nuts, paleo diet proponents argue that it is not healthy for our bodies to make them process wheat products, legumes, or starchy carbohydrates. These foods are some of the most nutrient dense but there are reasons to supplement. If you want a paleo multivitamin it’s worth knowing what to look for.
SIX Nutrition’s: Paleo Multivitamins
The idea of supplementing while living the paleo lifestyle is not inferring that our diets are not healthy but rather that there are nutrients that we might want more of. Thats the reason we made SIX Nutrition and why a Paleo multivitamin is worthwhile. The wholesome foods considered to be paleo include game meat, fish, vegetables, wild fruits, eggs, and nuts. As a general rule, these foods are high in animal fat and protein and low in carbohydrates and sugars. Here is a short list of reasons a paleo multivitamin, like SIX Nutrition, makes sense.
1. Most vitamins are tablets and are not readily absorbed. SIX Nutrition only uses the highest quality capsules for rapid and proper absorption. Whatever paleo multivitamin you choose, be sure to buy one that is encapsulated. See our post about tablet vs capsule vitamins here
2. It’s not necessarily important to get high amounts of omega-3, but it’s really important to balance omega-3 and omega-6 consumption. The goal is not to eat more and more omega-3 fats, but less and less omega-6. Don’t go overboard and try not to have any thought, they are essential fats after all. If you don’t frequently consume more omega-6 fats than our ancestors would have, you would probably benefit from either eating more wild oily fish or 1 or 2 grams of high quality fish oil per day in your Paleo Multivitamin
3. Probiotics improve the digestion of the foods you eat for the most natural pure energy from your normal foods.
4. Natural Energy from caffeine is superior to lab grown anhydrous caffeine. Green tea and Guarana seed extract have naturally smooth caffeine for all day energy.
5. Vitamin D- Unless you eat tons of wild caught oily fish and get plenty of sunlight exposure, chances are you would benefit from more vitamin D.
6. CoQ10.Heart disease is a major killer in our country, primarily because of our diet. A recent study in Japan revealed that clinically ill patients who suffered from severe heart failure readily absorbed ubiquinol CoQ10 into their bloodstreams and showed improvements in all health parameters.
7. The Paleo diet provides a far better mix than the typical American diet but when we make the change to Paleo, we are already starting with a deficit, as evidenced by bad body composition, poor energy levels, and altered hormones.
Most people making the change to the Paleo lifestyle are coming from diet that is usually not optimal, like a typical American diet. Moreover, the USA food supply is so altered that most Americans may not be getting the full nutritional value that they could or should get. This is the primary reason it is such a good idea to use a Paleo multivitamin.

Cheap Supplements; See how going direct saves you money.
Firstly, we want you to know that we have lowered the price of our SIX for MEN daily packs across the board.
- If you are on our @monthly program, we have already lowered the price of your standing order to $39.95 and as always you continue to enjoy FREE SHIPPING.
- For the incredibly popular and convenient 3 pack, we have lowered the price by $15 to $134.95 (on sale right now for $119.95) and we are still including a free t-shirt.
- Our one month pack is now 54.95. That it is $5 less!
Cheap Supplements; See how going direct saves you money with SIX Nutrition’s Vitamins for Men.
So, you are probably wondering how we managed to lower the price, it works like this. We made a conscious decision when we started SIX Nutrition a few years ago that we would sell direct to our customers. This choice was made because we understood the economics of supplement companies and their products. Cheap supplements are not always good supplements. Below is why-
If we want to sell a product on a store shelf (like GNC or Vitamin Shoppe) at $49.95, the retailer would buy it for at best 50% of the sales cost (less than $24.95). There is only a slight possibility that they would buy it directly from us at that price, so they would probably buy it from a wholesaler who would take a cut of about the same magnitude so between $10 and $12 dollars. The manufacturer (us) needs to make a little money so they would want about the same cut and that means the cost to manufacture of a month supply of that supplement would run about $4-$6. They do this by using fillers and cheap ingredients wherever possible.
Most people just go with it. That is CRAZY, right? Just to be clear, this is very common. That $75 tub of protein you take is amazing, but they make it for about $5-$10. NOW, here is how we differ from other companies- we could have taken and used the $4-$6 dollar cost to make a product fit in the market and try to differentiate ourselves somehow, or we could have doubled the quality, spent more than twice as much upfront for an amazing and effective product that works. This meant that if we wanted to sell our product through the traditional supplement channels, after everyone takes their cut, the customer would be paying around $89- $99 for a month supply!
BANANAS! Cheap supplements are not always good supplements.
So, we cut out the middle men and have been able to pass the savings on to you as the customer and you get a product that is twice as effective for the same price as you would expect to pay at a big box nutrition store. Where most companies start with a $4 cost and build cheap supplements, We built a product and then figured out the price we would need to sell it at. This still does not explain how we lowered our price though, sorry about the ramble, but not really.
Cheap Supplements; See how going direct saves you money. Get ultimate performance for your body.
You may not know this, but SIX Nutrition was started by a few friends who wanted a supplement that they believed in and was convenient. We bootstrapped it, worked with the top scientists and formulators and manufacturers in the country and made a product we believed it. Our first production run was outrageous and we barely made enough money to cover the cost of the materials. We believed wholly in the product and people loved it. Our next production run was larger and thanks to quantities of scale we were able to make a big cost cut in the sourcing of many of our ingredients without sacrificing one thing on quality. No compromises.
Fast forward a few more years and more than 10 million pills sold and we are able to get some of the absolute lowest prices on the best ingredients around because of our quantities. Instead of taking and pocketing this money, we want to pass the savings on. We want to lower the price point so that more people can try our premium supplements. We want everyone to know that you can buy the best supplements available direct from the manufacturer and by doing so, save money. Right?
Anyway, like we said initially, we have already implemented the change so you don’t need to do anything to take advantage of it, but we would appreciate you passing this info on to anyone who is taking premium or cheap supplements. Let them know about the economics of cheap supplements. Let them know how you go direct and get the best product available.
Thanks, Team SIX
3 Reasons to Increase Your Electrolyte Intake
3 Reasons to Increase Your Electrolyte Intake
- pH Regulation: Our bodies’ pH levels directly affect our digestion, nervous, respiratory, and other bodily systems. Electrolytes flood our bodies with necessary hydrogen ions, crucial in balancing overly acidic bodies.
- Muscle Contraction: Calcium, one of the most important electrolytes, decreases muscular lactic acid buildup, protecting against post-workout contractions.
- Healthy Cell Function: Our cells reproduce multiple times daily. Flooding our bodies with electrolytes helps aid cell function and reproduction, to decrease potentially cancerous mutations.
Would you like to increase your daily electrolyte intake? Six Nutrition offers great electrolyte enhanced products to boost wellness and overall health.
Want to improve your sleep? A recent study at Oxford shows that you can sleep better with higher omega-3 levels.
Omega-3 fatty acids are most commonly derived from fish oils, including tuna and salmon, and they have been linked to numerous health benefits. But now, a new study suggests that having higher levels of omega-3 DHA is associated with better sleep.
The researchers, from the University of Oxford in the UK, have published results of their study in the Journal of Sleep Research.
They conducted their research in 362 children from the UK between the ages of 7 and 9 years old, who were not recruited based on sleep problems.
According to the study, sleep problems in children are associated with poor health and behavioral and cognitive problems, the same health issues associated with deficiencies of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
As such, the team investigated whether taking 600 mg supplements of omega-3 DHA would improve sleep.
Sleep better with higher omega-3 levels
To begin, the team had parents and carers rate their child’s sleep habits during a typical week, which revealed that 40% of the children had clinical-level sleep problems, including resistance to bedtime, anxiety about sleep and waking in the middle of the night.
Wrist sensors were then fitted to 43 of the children with sleep problems to monitor their movements as they slept over 5 nights. Additionally, the team recorded levels of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the children, using fingerstick blood samples.
Children in omega-3 group experienced fewer sleep disturbances
Though previous studies have suggested associations between poor sleep and low blood omega-3 levels in infants and children with behavior or learning difficulties, the researchers say to their knowledge, this is the first study to assess links between sleep and fatty acid status in healthy children.
Results of the study revealed that, compared with the children who took the corn or soybean placebo, children who were taking daily omega-3 supplements experienced nearly 1 hour more sleep each night.
Additionally, they experienced seven fewer walking episodes per night, compared with the placebo group.
The team also found that fewer sleep problems are associated with higher ratios of DHA in relation to the long-chain omega-6 fatty arachidonic acid (AA).
Lead study author Prof. Paul Montgomery says:
“To find clinical level sleep problems in 4 in 10 of this general population is a cause for concern. Various substances made within the body from omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have long been known to play key roles in the regulation of sleep.”
“For example,” he adds, “lower ratios of DHA have been linked with lower levels of melatonin, and that would fit with our finding that sleep problems are greater in children with lower levels of DHA in their blood.”
Want to improve your sleep patterns? Sleep better with higher omega-3 levels. You can get fish oil pills in various sizes and forms. SIX Nutrition offers Premium Icelandic Fish Oil in 90 Day supply for 29.95
